Tendong Lho Rum Faat
Tendong Hilltop is one of South Sikkim’s most sacred Lepcha worship sites, rooted in the belief that Lepcha ancestors took refuge here during a great deluge. Tradition says their prayers to Itbu Rum (the Creator) were answered when Kohom Fo (a hill partridge) appeared and accepted grains of Mong Chee-Bep offered during Rum Faat, after which the floodwaters receded. Today, the annual Tendong Lho Rum Faat is still observed at this historic hilltop and is officially recognised by the Government of Sikkim. In 1997, 8th August—the day of the ritual—was declared a State Holiday in honour of this sacred tradition.
Tendong Monastery
Tendong Hilltop is also a peaceful spiritual retreat for Tibetan Buddhist practitioners—especially Bhutia followers of the Nyingma and Kagyu traditions. Home to Tendong Gumpa and a few small sacred structures, the summit offers an ideal setting for meditation amid a secluded forest landscape.
During Ram Navami (Chaite Dashain), the trail turns into a vibrant pilgrimage trek. The season becomes even more lively when Ram Navami coincides with Tshechu (the 10th day of the Tibetan lunar calendar) at Tendong Gumpa—usually in March–April—drawing devotees uphill for blessings of good health and a good harvest.
